Fixing a Broken Mind
If a part breaks in the engine of your car, you replace the broken part with a new one. The broken part represents a breakdown in order. The new part is more orderly than the older broken part, as it relates to the closed system you call your engine. When the new part replaces the old, the whole system becomes more orderly and your engine purrs like a kitten. When you went down to the local car-parts store and came back with the new part, you were actually going outside the broken, closed system in order to fix it. You could not fix your engine by taking out a broken part and putting it right back in. Neither would you find success by replacing it with a new broken part. Your engine wouldn’t work, and your neighbors would stop dropping by. You wouldn’t treat your car engine like this. You would think that anyone who did would be rowing with only one oar in the water. Yet that is exactly what you’re doing with the mind when you “fix” a problem.
All right, I guess we cannot go down to the local mind-parts store to replace a broken mind part. Or can we? Can we step outside the mind and come back with a replacement for ego? In a manner of speaking we can. Self-awareness is stepping outside the mind while it is still running. It’s like turning on the broken car engine to see where the problem is. And here the analogy begins to break down a little. We can step outside the mind and observe it working, but there is nowhere to go to get a new part. There is nothing you can do to fix the broken mind. The fact is a broken mind is fixed by “not-doing.” Simply observing a broken mind will fix it! That’s the point. It is the not doing that fixes everything—or more accurately, it is in the observing that you realize that it is already fixed.
Observing ego while it works its devilish tricks means that it can no longer get away with them. Ego must work in the secret in the shadows of your mind. Ego is shadow. Observing ego ruins all its fun. Paying attention to the workings of your mind is like turning up the rheostat on a lightbulb. As the light gets brighter and brighter, the shadows grow dim and eventually disappear. There is nothing to fix. Increase vigilant awareness, and the shadows will be seen for what they really are—the absence of Light.
Your mind is the lightbulb, and the electricity that creates light in the bulb is awareness. Answers don’t come from your mind; they come from awareness, which is the pure expression of creativity and order. If you think that your answers come from your mind, then ego has put another one over on you. The mind changes awareness into thought like the bulb changes electricity into light. Light comes from the electricity passing through the bulb.
